Training versus Education

Consider this debate – education versus training.  Is there a difference?  I recently discussed this with a respected colleague.  He posed this question and I had fun thinking about this.  I think there is.  We both agreed education is about learning something.  It can be and usually is a very academic approach for the learner.  In a way, it is about a better understanding of a thing, concept, topic, etc.  Training, on the other hand, is (and should be) about taking the learning and applying it.  It is the “how to do it, how to apply it” part.  How many times have you been in a training and the time spent was only educating you on something without the “how to do it” part?  Does this mean training cannot include education?  No.  It does suggest that “doing-ness” has got to be the larger part of “knowing-ness” in order for training to be effective.

Here is why the debate is important to your organization; which is at the heart of your learning and development culture?  Many organizations, in an effort to get the information out there, simply want a message delivered.  That is education.  What is lacking is the key elements to impact both retention and adoption.  That is training.
